Mutropolis Gamescom 2020 Impressions

“It is the year 5000, and the greatest achievements in human history are forgotten. The pyramids, the Mona Lisa, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air – forgotten.”

Tell me no more Pirita Studio, that last line got me hooked.

Mutropolis is a sci-fi adventure set on the abandoned Planet Earth. Our hero/character, Henry, is an archaeologist from the 50th century that comes from Mars to Earth to discover ancient relics from our time. During an excavation and after the opening of an ancient door, everything goes sideways for him and his team.

I finished the demo provided by the developers and man, this is a beautiful game. It’s no secret that I love adventure games, I am probably the dedicated adventurer on our site and I immediately got interested in the game during my playthrough. Here’s what these guys from Pirita Studio do great; beautiful visual style that reminds me a bit of Broken Age, lovely characters that, even in the short duration of the demo, I got to like (there’s Professor Totel for example who acts a lot like Brody from Indiana Jones), the story got me hooked with its fast world building and I want to see how it develops. Most important though, the main character, Henry, is totally likeable, witty and with an aura of awkwardness. He is like a blend of George Stobbart from Broken Sword and Rincewind from Discworld. I like him, a lot.

As far as point and click adventures go, this probably falls on the easiest side. Everything happens with two mouse buttons, talking to other characters and checking your inventory. The puzzles were not hard at all and I somewhat always knew what to try, where to move and who to talk to. The game actually tells you that through conversations and therefore nothing is vague or requires extreme searching. Mind you, this is the impression I got from a very short demo, so take everything with a grain of salt. The full release might be more challenging.

All in all, this looks like a very well made point and click adventure with all the elements that make adventure games awesome to experience. The devs put a lot of love in the game, and it shows. From the visual style, the direction, the dialogue, the characters, they pretty much paid attention to everything. Keep an eye open for this game, I know I will.
